Ron Milbanke:

"The hard work by the committee was amply rewarded with a big turnout for this event. Weather was very warm and the track dusty. Peter, Sven and Justin set out a course worthy of the status of the race and with John P., Kathryn and Stephen on hand, registration and timing was fast and efficient. Peter also found a marshal for one of the gates which meant that he had no excuse for not riding. Jane and Dominic Blissett were visiting from Christchurch. The former Sec/Treas was roped in to marshal while the former president entered to reacquaint himself with his old stamping ground.

The first drama occurred before we got underway with Sarnim breaking a couple of spoke en-route. He was obviously devastated to miss the event but then Matt came to the rescue and lent him his bike. Matt and Keith rushed to get pedals fitted and ride set up.

There was quite a stampede as the 57 riders headed for the single track, luckily all survived and they sorted themselves out over the next hour or so. There was a shorter course for the younger juniors and we saw a couple of mums escorting their younger family members on this course.. Angus Kopua headed his brother Fletcher in this category and even had the energy for a third lap. Tom Morrison met with misfortune on lap one, but mum was on hand to relieve the pain. Mr. Whippy also turned up with more anesthetic later in the race.

The borrowed bike was obviously working well and Sarnim was just over a minute clear of Mitchell at the end of lap one of three. Kiel, Joel, Josh and Connor were in close company in the next four slots, then came Khan and Justin, the latter pedaling like fury on his single speed. Liv was a handy 7 minutes clear of the ladies field and Bruce headed the over 50’s a minute ahead of Andrew.

Sarnim extended his lead on lap 2 but the heat and dust were affecting lap times with everyone slightly slower on lap 2. Connor got a flatty to drop out while in 6th place and Justin had pedaled his way past Khan but the order otherwise remained as per for the leading few.

It was a very animated Sarnim who crossed the line after three laps, he was pumped and was so thankful to Matt who sacrificed his bike to enable him to become club champ and leading vet. Mitchell claimed silver and the open men’s title while Kiel battled on for third ahead of Josh and Joel took out the under 20’s title in 5th overall.

Liv was 16 minutes clear of the next lady so took out overall and under 20 titles. Kat, Yvette and Selena were on the podium for open women, Joel, Khan and Bailey were best under 20’s. Ian and Brent joined Sarnim in the vet men’s grade, with Alana and Kathryn best in vet women. Bruce held on to take out the masters grade with Andrew and Keith completing that podium. In the under 14 grade Cam Clemett was first with the Luff twins 2nd and 3rd. I suspect that Josh Black may have ridden the longer course in this age group.

With Mr. Whippy in attendance, a pizza run and drinks on hand, the celebrations in the sun were enjoyed by all. A great morning of mountain biking. For more of the same we will be at Conders Bend on Thursday evening, 6:30 for a 7:00 p.m. start."
